Alzheimer’s WA launches its latest Memory Café on Friday 23 September in the heart of Bunbury, at Caf-fez on Prinsep Street.
The opening will be attended by Minister for Disability Services; Fisheries; Seniors and Ageing; and Small Business and Member for Bunbury, the Honourable Don Punch MLA.
The launch takes place during Dementia Awareness Week, Australia’s largest dementia awareness campaign.
Memory Cafés are a traditional café in the community. Once a month they hold a morning or afternoon tea for people living with dementia and their carers. They are hosted at local cafes across WA and are an informal and social occasion where people can feel welcome, remain socially active and make new friends.
Alzheimer’s WA dementia care experts are on hand at each cafe to provide advice and support. These Memory Cafés are part of an overall, person-centred approach to supporting people living with dementia and their families and building dementia friendly communities.
Alzheimer’s WA Chair, Professor Warren Harding said, “A dementia friendly community is a place where people living with dementia are supported and enabled to live with meaning and purpose. Aging with dignity in your community is critical.
“I am delighted that the local Member of Parliament, Don Punch initiated having a café in Bunbury,” he said.
Alzheimer’s WA CEO said, “At Alzheimer’s WA, we recognise the need to encourage inclusion of people living with dementia in the local community. That’s why we partner with local Government and businesses to bring the Memory Café concept to Western Australia.
“I would like to thank Bianca at Caf-fez, the Bunbury community and the government for getting behind this initiative and playing a role in supporting people on the dementia journey,” she said.
Anyone needing support or advice about dementia or any of the services provided by Alzheimer’s WA, is encouraged to contact the organisation via their website at alzheimerswa.org.au or phone 1300 66 77 88.
