Alzheimer’s WA, the State’s leading provider of dementia care, announces Board changes – 1 July 2026

Chair of Alzheimer’s WA, Professor Warren Harding AM, today announced the appointment of Mr Arnold Wong to the Board, effective 1 July 2026, following a formal nomination process.

Mr Wong brings extensive governance, strategic leadership and community sector experience through his roles as Deputy Chair of Advocare WA, Board Member of Multicultural Futures, and Inaugural Board Member and Treasurer of Software Australia, as well as national leadership positions with the Australian Computer Society. He brings organisational transformation, risk management and digital innovation expertise and also has lived family experience with dementia. He is passionate about improving outcomes for people living with dementia, their families and carers.

Professor Harding AM said he was delighted to welcome Arnold to the Board at a time of significant reform across the aged care sector and increasing recognition of the importance of dementia care in the community.

“I am confident his experience working with boards and executive teams will be important as Alzheimer’s WA continues to build its advocacy, education, respite and community support services, including day and overnight respite for the 48,000 Western Australians living with dementia. This is a $2.8 trillion global disease and the number one cause of death for both females and males.”

Deputy Chair Dr Sean Maher welcomed Arnold to the Board and said he looked forward to working with him to support the organisation’s continued growth and impact.

At the same time, the organisation sadly acknowledges the retirement of Directors Majo Merriam (2021–2026) and Matt Budge (2019–2026), who have both made significant contributions over many years and provided excellent governance and oversight to the growth of AWA during their time on the Board.

Professor Harding AM highlighted the great unity, diligence and passion both Directors brought to the role, saying that AWA is significantly stronger as a result.

CEO Ella Dachs added that she appreciates the guidance the retiring Directors have provided. Their engagement with the organisation and senior staff has been positive, and she looks forward to working with Arnold in his new role.

The Cook Government’s commitment to a State Dementia Action Plan (SDAP) underlines the role Alzheimer’s WA is playing in the SDAP’s development, training and care navigation, ahead of its pending launch during the Dementia Symposium on 23 September.
