Hawthorn House Official Opening Don’s Cottage in Albany

On Friday, August 23rd, Alzheimer’s WA marked a significant milestone with the official opening of Don’s Cottage at Hawthorn House in Albany. The event drew a remarkable crowd of over 150 guests, celebrating this important occasion.

The new cottage respite house was officially opened by Member of Parliament Rebecca Stephens MLA, Labor Member for Albany, on behalf of the Hon. Don Punch MLA, Minister for Seniors and Ageing. Also in attendance were valued clients, volunteers, Ricky Burges PSM, Chairperson of the Great Southern Development Commission, local councillors, and Alzheimer’s WA Board of Directors, led by Chair Prof. Warren Harding AM and CEO, Ella Dachs.

The latest addition to Hawthorn House, Don’s Cottage, is a $2 million respite facility that is now operational. This wonderful new space doubles the capacity for overnight respite care, addressing the growing needs of the region’s aging population.

Don’s Cottage introduces an innovative model of care with double bedrooms, designed to enhance the respite experience. This unique setup allows carers and their loved ones to share quality time together, creating a supportive, person centred and nurturing environment that enriches their stay.

Rebecca Stephens MLA, who represented Minister for Seniors and Ageing said, “The WA State Government recognises the tremendous work Alzheimer’s WA does in WA and in particular serving the growing Albany region. Alzheimer’s WA is playing an increasingly important role in supporting care in the home, extending independent living and ensuring people living with dementia are well supported to live their best life in the community”

Chairman, Prof. Warren Harding AM, thanked the major contributors to the project, in particular the The Don Brandenburg Foundation, “Paying it forward has enabled Alzheimer’s WA to create an enduring legacy for the future benefit of the communities of the Great Southern given the rising prevalence of dementia and the ageing population” he said.

Alzheimer’s WA CEO, Ella Dachs reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to delivering the highest quality care and support services to people living with dementia. “At Don’s Cottage, we embrace hope, compassion and comfort, ensuring that no one has to walk this journey alone,” she stated.
