The Dementia Symposium 2024

Alzheimer’s W.A. (AWA) hosted its 10th Annual Dementia Symposium yesterday at the Perth Convention Centre, with the theme “Future Ready: Innovative Dementia Care & Support.” It was an exceptional event, featuring a lineup of distinguished and inspiring speakers.

The symposium’s world-class speakers included keynote speakers The Hon. Emma McBride MP, Dr. Shirley Bowen, Director General of WA Health, Janet Anderson PSM, Commissioner of the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission, AWA Chairman Professor Warren Harding AM, and CEO Ella Dachs. They addressed person-centred care, groundbreaking innovations, and the practical challenges faced by people living with dementia.

Key highlights of the day included insightful presentations and panel discussions featuring Professor Warren Harding AM and Dr. Sean Maher.
Board members Majo Merriam and Vera Riley presented this year’s Dementia Change Champion nominees and award winner with thoughtful gifts, recognising their dedication. Alzheimer’s WA extends its heartfelt congratulations to all the Champions and a special congratulations to the 2024 Dementia Change Champion of the Year, Caroline Beales.

We would like to express our sincere thanks to the Department of Health and Aged Care for their collaboration, our dedicated volunteers, the impactful speakers, and the Friends in Harmony Dementia Choir for their wonderful performance. We also extend our gratitude to all 320 attendees for their generous support in making this year’s symposium a success.
The positive feedback has been overwhelming, and we encourage everyone to mark their calendars for next year’s event, which will take place during Dementia Awareness Month in September 2025!
In support of Dementia Awareness Month, we invite you to take action by raising awareness and registering for AWA’s Walk to Remember ON November 10 2024. Together, we can continue making a meaningful difference in the lives of people living with dementia and their loved ones.
